English Department, State Polytechnic of Padang established at 2009. State Polytechnic of Padang is one of faculties in Andalas University. It consists of eight departments in Diploma program. It includes English Department as the last department. At the first grade, it had 18 students. The educational institution is divided into broadcasting and translating subject.

Broadcasting and translation are subject that really related to English skill. English has big role in developing broadcasting and translation field. At these days, English is used in daily life. When we enter to coorporation world or to industry world. It is not accepted to broadcasting and translation. Consequently, State Polytechnic of Padang has opened English Department since 2009. The lecturers of English Department observed that broadcasting and translation have big opportunity in corporation world at this time.

Broadcasting is a subject that concerns television and radio skill. It includes journalism: an activity to search information or news into written form, the way to share a subject to public media, and technique for broadcasting process. Translating is an activity of transferring source language into target language. English is transferred into Bahasa or conversely, for example. It really needs our language understanding. We translate the language without changing the culture of the content and it must has equal meaning between the both language. Translators always risk inappropriate spill-over of source-language idiom and usage into the target-language translation. “On the other hand, spill-overs have imported useful source-language calques and loanwords that have enriched the target languages. Indeed, translators have helped substantially to shape the languages into which they have translated” (wikipedia.com).

The students in English Department may choose which one they prefer to master between broadcasting and translating. The students who have expertise in film making or technic of broadcasting can choose the subject to master the skill more or they want to explore broadcasting world. If the students have expertise in transferring language and high language understanding, they would deepen translating.

Broadcasting and translating are advantageous metier. Everyone who takes broadcasting metier is called broadcaster. While a person who take translation metier is translator. Someone expert in the field can get much experience, much new information, and much salary. Certainly, he/she must master it. As sure a translator. If a translator has many social networking,  he/she will get much experience and much money. In addition, if the quality of translation is high and good by its word choice that can be understood by readers.

At these days, broadcasting and translating are popular metier. The lecturers of English Department have observed that broadcasting and translating are rapidly developing in corporation world. Communication world is the most important thing at these days. The people would not be far from information. At this time, translating has been a professional job. Translating is to do with broadcasting. As we know that the number of international film that enters in Indonesia is high. Consequently, it needs a professional translator to translate the language in supporting Company Corporation. A translator will work nationally and internationally if he/she has good skill, corporation, and social networking. An interpreter is a metier related to translator. Many government institutions and international companies need translators and interpreters rely on their work.

It is good that English is related to broadcasting and translating. We know that broadcasting is related to communications up till now. The lecturers have new initiative to get English and broadcasting on a more professional corporation. English is also related to translating class. Generally, translating has own faculty in eight-semester program. At this time we would have the skill in six-semester program.

There is no harm if we know about the lessons at each of the both fields. In broadcasting class, the students will get lessons such as announcing, Massa communication, radio broadcasting, radio and television journalism, script typing, interview, way of reporting, feature and documentary, other lessons. In translating class, the students will get lessons such as English and Bahasa linguistics, English grammar, Bahasa grammar, way of translating, technology usage in translating, knowledge about culture in a country to translating process, and others.

Broadcasting has many parties such as business, politic, education, and culture. Broadcasting media consists of written as and mass media. Written medias are magazine and newspaper. While mass media are radio, television, and online website. Many things that can be concerned in broadcasting.

Broadcsting is observed from business  is an organization to produce advertisements in promoting products or public services. Broadcasting is a media of any companies to introduce their product by the advertisement. The content has to be related to the purpose of a company using broadcasting service and has to be able to attrack the audence interest. Those are fancy, interesting, appropriate, and accurate.

Broadcasting provides a place for politic. Politicial parties declarate an important event or promote their party in broadcasting media. In broadcasting media, they can influences or changes  people’s thinking. For government aparaturs, they acknowledge people about their political event, important information, government decisions, or development of a country. Broadcasting or media is important element of politic.

Education is also a unit of broadcasting which shares any educational event and information. Broadcasting world gives lesson for people to know about everything. It can be formal or non-formal lesson. Education contains of various subjects to be learning for people. For example, an event concerns education, dialog about education, or reportase to acknowledge people, those are things in broadcasting. Thus, broadcasting is a unit of education.

English Department, State Polytechnic of Padang is the one educational institution in Sumatera which opened broadcasting and translating in diploma program. Broadcasting class in diploma program is opened outside of Sumatera like in Padjajaran University. And now, in Padang, West Sumatera has opened English Department with broadcasting specification. As same with translating, only State Polytechnic of Padang that opens English Department with translating in diploma program. Thus, it is a big opportunity to attracted students to enter to English Department, State Polytechnic of Padang.

Most students possibly get doubt when they are asked to choose the best one. At first time of entering English Department, State Polytechnic of Padang, the students are given general English skill and recognition of broadcasting and translating  for four-semester. In semester V, they have to take specification between broadcasting and translating. It is not to differ a metier, it is to master more in a subject. English will be the main subject of their project.

A broadcaster and a translator have strength in his/her field. Radio and television broadcasting needs creative, innovative, and productive teenagers. By the challenge, we are demanded to be a better person. A broadcaster has to know about many things. It is not accepted for a translator.

To be a translator is a good profit profession. If we are expert in doing translation task, we will get payment based on our request per sheet. We can also payment after doing translation task while we are university student. The customer can pay the task minimal Rp.10.000,- per sheet, it is for national. If we get international document, our task will be paid more than Rp.20.000,-. We can do the task wherever and whenever we are without going to office. We just take the task and we do at home, for example. Thousands of people online are discovering how doing simple translator jobs from home can be very profitable.

Translating has also education, business, and culture unit. By translating, we know about much information and knowledge. We get much payment than work as a teenager in office or company. We can also get much payment for doing translation task as much as payment of a teenager in international company. Education is the most important that is contained in translation business. Translating is not also as a business, but also as an educational task. So many knowledge in text task that we do.

Every field that we take certainly has some challenges. A broadcaster must be workmanlike in respect any information. Being handy is also important for a broadcaster in taking any knowledge. A broadcaster has to master verbal and nonverbal language to support film and radio making and has to be able to create new idea wherever and whenever he/she is. A translator is someone expert in linguistic and language understanding. Thus, analysis about source and target language is most important to be mastered. In addition to language and linguistic, a translator has respect to recent information to support translation task and to enrich vocabularies. More we get words, smarter we are in analyzing the meaning.

In diploma program, the students have to do internship in a company before making a final task to get understanding what they learn from campus and to apply their skill. They are likely a teenager in the company. The students who take the broadcasting class, they do internship in television and radio station. Translating class students can also do internship in television and radio translation. Especially, in television broadcasting station needs a translator to transfer their film script. Many companies need a translator service nationally and internationally. 

According to Lydia graduated from Broadcasting Department, Padjajaran University, the ways to get an internship place: first, sending proposal to appropriate company that really need our metier. Second, searching some companies which have opportunity for Students University for doing internship. Third, we have social relationship with people who have big role in the company. And the last, we have patience and hard work. We can apply point 3 and 4 to get an internship place if our proposal is difficult to be accepted in the company. When we do internship, we have to do command and rule n the company well. We must be discipline and good attitude. 

There is final task in diploma program. The final task is the result that we have got from internship, job training, and practice. We develop our thinking to be a useful writing. We are guided by a lecturer to arrange our written final task. After finishing the process, we do session to take responsibility from what we write in fnal task. At the same day, we get the result from what we have done whether we pass diploma program or not and we get A.md academic degree.

After graduating, we need to know about job vacancy related to our metier. We search any information about our metier whether we have been already to enter a work environment. We want to get a job that is suitable with our metier, therefore we must master it. It is not getting loose of our own skill and good character. Everything will be well if we really master it.
